Assistive Devices for Persons with Disabilities

SUPPORTING PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES WITH ASSISTIVE DEVICES

The Employers’ Federation of Ceylon, Specialised Training & #Disability Resource Centre provides assistive devices for persons with disabilities to be independent and develop their employability skills. Mr Lalith Wickramasinghe received a wheelchair sponsored by Ms Sharmeen Falaldeen in July 2021. Mr Lalith Wickramasinghe is a disability activist who supports many persons with disabilities at the grassroots level to achieve their rights in the Puttlam district.

DISABILITY SENSITIVITY FOR ACADEMIC STAFF OF UNIVERSITY OF COLOMBO

The University of Colombo conducted training on Disability Awareness and Sensitization under the Faculty of Arts – AHEAD grant and implemented in collaboration with the Centre for Disability Research Education and Practice (CEDREP) and the Staff Development Centre (SDC), the University of Colombo for the academic staff in May 2021. Ms. #Manique Gunaratne conducted the session on how to provide;

  • Diversity of disability – varied lived realities of persons with disabilities.
  • The role of inclusive technology and assistive devices.
  • Inclusive language and terminology
  • Building a respectful and inclusive university community by interaction, assistance, disability accommodation and socialization.

DISABILITY INCLUSION ON WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY

Persons with disabilities at The Employers’ Federation of Ceylon, Specialised Training & #Disability Resource Centre spoke on their rights on World Humanitarian Day in August 2021.

“Disability inclusion is an essential condition to upholding human rights! Persons with disabilities are known to be at increased risk of protection concerns and transmission of the virus in the COVID19 pandemic. This is because they can face higher exposure rates due to the need for close contact with personal assistants/caregivers. Also, due to travel restrictions, persons with disabilities may be separated from family and/or primary caregivers and not have companions to facilitate their access to services.” says Lalith Wickramasinghe.
