Asia Pacific School of Internet Governance (APSIG) is a platform for fostering capacity development in Internet Governance within the Asia-Pacific region. Since its establishment in 2015, APSIG has played a vital role in in advancing knowledge and collaboration in this field. Manique Gunaratne represented Sri Lanka at this APSIG event which was held at the Park Inn by Radisson Hotel in Manilla, Philippine in November 2023. The event promised to be an exceptional Gathering. The significance of this event was that inclusion of persons with disabilities. Manique Gunaratne conducted the session on “Digital accessibility” and internet governance for persons with disabilities which was an eye opener for persons with non-disabilities.
APSIG, or the Asia Pacific School on Internet Governance, is a regional initiative that focuses on educating and fostering discussions around Internet governance issues in the Asia Pacific region. It typically brings together participants from various backgrounds, including government, civil society, academia, persons with disabilities and the private sector.
APSIG aims to enhance understanding of internet governance principles, policies, and frameworks. It covers a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:
- Digital Inclusion: APSIG might explore strategies to promote digital inclusion for people with disabilities. This could involve discussing policies, technologies, and best practices to make online platforms, websites, and digital services more accessible.
- Policy Development: Understanding how policies around the internet are formed and implemented.
- Technical Aspects: Exploring the technical infrastructure and protocols that govern the functioning of the internet.
- Legal and Regulatory Frameworks: Examining the legal aspects and regulations concerning the internet.
- Social and Ethical Issues: Discussing the societal impact, ethics, and human rights aspects related to the internet.
APSIG, as a forum for discussing internet governance issues, can play a crucial role in raising awareness and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to prioritize and implement accessibility standards in the digital sphere. By addressing accessibility concerns, APSIG contributes to a more inclusive and equitable online environment for all users.
