EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH TRAVEL IN THAILAND

Accessible tourism ensures that individuals with disabilities have equal opportunities to explore and enjoy various destinations, attractions, and activities just like their non-disabled counterparts. It promotes a more inclusive society by breaking down barriers and reducing discrimination based on physical or cognitive abilities.

Manique Gunaratne got the opportunity to visit the Grand Palace Emerald Buddha Temple in Bangkok in Thailand in December 2023.

The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, are iconic landmarks located in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. This complex holds great cultural, historical, and spiritual significance and is a major tourist attraction.

The Grand Palace was built in 1782 by King Rama I, the founder of the Chakri Dynasty, as the royal residence. Over the years, subsequent kings added structures and embellishments to the complex.

Wat Phra Kaew, situated within the Grand Palace grounds, was constructed to house the highly revered Emerald Buddha, which is actually made of green jadeite rather than emerald.

The architecture of the Grand Palace is a stunning blend of traditional Thai, Khmer, and European styles. Elaborate golden spires, intricate carvings, and colorful mosaics characterize the buildings. Wat Phra Kaew showcases classical Thai temple architecture, with a multi-tiered roof, intricate gilded details, and mythical guardian figures adorning the entrances. The highlight of Wat Phra Kaew is the Emerald Buddha, a small, seated Buddha image in the meditating posture. Despite its name, the statue is made of jadeite and is clothed in elaborate garments that are changed by the Thai King during different seasons. The Emerald Buddha is highly revered, and the temple serves as a center of religious ceremonies and rituals.

The Grand Palace complex is divided into several precincts, each with its own unique structures and significance. These include the Outer Court, Middle Court, and Inner Court. The Outer Court contains various government offices and public buildings, while the Inner Court is reserved for the king’s residence and close royal attendants. The Grand Palace complex houses several museums and galleries that display artifacts, historical items, and traditional Thai art. Visitors can explore the rich history and cultural heritage of Thailand within these spaces. The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew are major tourist attractions, drawing millions of visitors each year. Proper dress is essential, with visitors required to cover their shoulders, arms, and legs as a sign of respect. The site is not only a cultural treasure but also a spiritual center, so visitors are expected to maintain a level of reverence during their visit.

Overall, the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew stand as testament to Thailand’s rich history, cultural heritage, and the enduring influence of Buddhism in the region. These magnificent structures continue to be symbols of national pride and are must-visit destinations for those exploring Bangkok.
